Gear up for greatness

Learn about the essential equipment for youth hockey and how Mobile Bay Youth Hockey supports new players in getting started.

Learn to Play

No equipment starting out!

We'd recommend the following for kids who enjoy their time with us. (We can help with finding the correct size for your child)

  • Helmet with Cage*
  • Stick
  • Jock(Male) or Jill(Female)
  • Gloves
  • Shin Guards
  • Elbow Pads*
  • Skates*

Helmet with cage is not optional. Kids may wear a bike helmet until one is purchased. (We do not want kids taking pucks, balls, or sticks to the face. Accidents happen.)

Any elbow pads will work, they do not need the hockey elbow pads.

Kids do not need skates to start out. If they can skate, they are more than welcome to skate with the other kids! Inline Hockey Skates are not required, you may use any inline skates you can find. We can teach your child to skate if they would like to learn.

Starting your hockey journey

We believe in making hockey accessible for everyone. When your child first joins our free Learn-To-Play program, they do not need any equipment to get started. Just bring their enthusiasm and a willingness to learn!

Once they've experienced the thrill of the game and decide they want to continue, we recommend investing in two key pieces of equipment:

  • A helmet with a cage: Essential for safety and protection.
  • Their own stick: Having their own stick helps them develop a personal connection to the game.

Mobile Bay Youth Hockey is committed to fostering a healthy youth league for hockey in the Mobile Bay area, and we're here to help every step of the way.

Where to find equipment

Finding the right equipment can be exciting! Here are some suggestions for where families can find or purchase necessary hockey gear, whether new or used:

New equipment:

Used equipment:

  • Facebook Marketplace: A great local resource for pre-owned gear.
  • SidelineSwap: An online marketplace for buying and selling sports equipment.
  • Play It Again Sports: Check your local store for used sporting goods.

These resources can help you find affordable options as your child begins their hockey adventure.

Equipment for our learn-to-play program

Our Learn-To-Play program is designed to introduce youth ball and roller hockey in the Mobile Bay area in a fun and accessible way. We understand that acquiring equipment can be a hurdle for new players, which is why we offer some assistance.

We have a limited amount of sticks that children can borrow for their first few sessions. This allows them to try out the sport without an initial investment.

After their first time coming out, we kindly ask that they please find a cheap wood stick with an ABS blade. This helps us ensure we have spare sticks available for new aspiring players who are just starting their own hockey journey with us.

Join Mobile Bay Youth Hockey and help us grow the sport to have a healthy youth league for ice hockey!
